The RS Taichi RSY271 is a straight-cut riding pant in water-repellent quick-dry fabric that passes for ordinary trousers off the bike. The knee protector is CE Level 1 and the hip uses foam padding, both upgradeable. It wets through and dries fast rather than keeping water out. Priced at 3,500,000 VND at BigBike.
POSITIONING
The RSY271 is for riders who would rather nobody noticed they are wearing protective gear. The leg is cut straight with no cargo pockets bulging at the thigh, so it reads as normal trousers in a cafe or at work. The quick-dry fabric has a water-repellent finish and dries fast. In exchange the knee protector is Level 1 and the pant is not waterproof.
QUICK DRY
Benefit: For daily commuters, the real difference between wearing gear and skipping it is often whether the pant looks odd in a meeting. The RSY271 solves exactly that.
Proof: RS Taichi lists a straight cut with a zip pocket and side waist adjusters, and no thigh cargo pockets.
Limit: Without cargo pockets, bulkier items go in the seat storage or a bag.
STRAIGHT FIT
Benefit: The pant comes with CE Level 1 knee protectors and hip padding, enough for city speeds and short trips.
Proof: RS Taichi lists soft CE Level 1 knee protectors and polyethylene hip padding, both with higher-level upgrade options.
Straight talk: If you ride fast and rank protection over looks, the same-priced RSY258 has Level 2 knee protectors from the start.
GEAR UP
Benefit: The reflector sits at the back hem, right where the headlights behind you sweep at night. The leg is always moving with the pegs, so that point catches a following rider's eye better than a static panel.
Proof: RS Taichi lists the reflector position at the back hem.
Limit: Reflective material only works when light hits it; it does not replace a tail light or a hi-vis layer in fog.
SUMMARY
Choose the RSY271 for daily commuting with frequent stops, when the pant should look ordinary off the bike. At the same 3,500,000 VND, the cargo-cut RSY258 brings Level 2 knee protectors and thigh pockets for protection-first riders. For hours of rain, both lose to the RSY270 Drymaster Kompass with its waterproof membrane.
Not ideal if: you want Level 2 knee protectors from the start, need cargo pockets, or ride long in rain.
RS Taichi sizes by waist, hip and inseam. This model has the widest range of any pant in the shop, reaching 3XL for men, with B variants for riders of the same height but larger thighs and waist. Women sizes are WM and WL.
A straight cut cannot disguise the thigh the way a cargo cut does. Riders with larger thighs should go straight to a B variant rather than moving up a size, which otherwise leaves the waist loose and the thigh tight.
