Straight answer: most riders buy protective gear in this order, helmet, gloves, jacket. Knees come last almost every time. Yet when a bike goes down the knee is among the first things to take the weight and the impact, and a knee joint injury keeps people off the bike longer than most of the common ones.
The truth: the SK-684 Supreme Knee Guard is standalone armour from Komine, a Japanese brand made in China, maker code 04-684. Three hard plastic shells joined by a hinge, EVA foam padding, a mesh face against the leg, and perforations through both the shell and the lining. It straps on with elastic and hook-and-loop. Black, sold as a set for both legs.

Three shells and a hinge
Benefit: the standing problem with knee armour is the conflict between hard and flexible. A single rigid shell covers well but digs in when you bend your leg, gets tiring on a long sit, and ends up being taken off. Soft armour is comfortable to wear but does not hold back much when it matters.
Evidence: this model splits the shell into three pieces joined by a hinge, so bending your knee makes the pieces slide with each other instead of fighting you. That is how it covers the shin below the knee and still lets you sit on a bike comfortably, whereas a one-piece shell reaching that far would barely bend at all. Both shell and lining are perforated, which matters in heat and humidity, because armour that traps heat is armour that gets removed.
Limit: hard still means bulkier than foam. On a scooter or underbone with your knees folded up, the top edge will feel intrusive for the first few rides. And perforated or not, sitting at a midday red light is still hot, which is the limit of all rigid armour.
Wear it over ordinary trousers
Benefit: this is the most practical reason to buy standalone armour. You do not have to buy a full set of protective trousers, and you do not have to change clothes when you arrive. Strap it over the jeans you are already wearing, then pull it off and stow it when you get there. For someone who commutes during the week and rides further at weekends, that is far simpler.
Stated properly, and this is what many sellers leave out: standalone armour does NOT replace armoured trousers. The two do different jobs. Armour handles impact to the joint. When your body slides along tarmac, what takes the abrasion is the fabric, and ordinary jeans tear through quickly. Knee armour over jeans is far better than nothing, but it is still short of proper riding trousers with armour pockets built in.
Limit: worn outside, it shows. That does not suit arriving somewhere looking tidy without stopping to take it off. If that matters, consider trousers with armour pockets instead.
Genuine and warranty
The truth: the SK-684 is genuine Komine stock sold at BigBike under maker code 04-684, a Japanese brand made in China, in black. It is a recent arrival in our range.
Evidence and limits: the product label states CE Level 2, which you can read yourself on arrival. Warranty runs 12 months against factory faults such as a shell cracking without impact, a hinge separating, failed stitching or a broken closure. It excludes a shell cracked in a fall, because that is the moment the armour did its job.
One thing worth knowing about armour that has been down: a plastic shell absorbs force by deforming and cracking. If you come off and the guard is cracked or no longer holds its shape, replace it rather than carry on, even if it looks intact. That rule applies to all rigid armour.
Comparison
Choose it when: you ride long distances or rough roads, you want the higher of the two levels in the limb armour standard, and you accept the extra bulk that comes with it.
How it differs from the Komine SK-608 we also stock: both are Komine knee guards and both cover knee and shin. This comes in ONE size, so the question is not which size but whether it fits you. The elastic and hook-and-loop adjust within a certain range, and outside that range it either slips however tight you pull it or stays too tight however far you let it out. Trouser thickness matters too: over heavy jeans is not the same as over thin fabric.
